April 28 - 30
Left Little Alligator River where we anchored and traveled 48 miles across the Albemarle Sound. The winds were calm and we had a smooth ride to Elizabeth City. Albemarle Sound is 45 miles long and 11 miles wide and the seas can be rough if you catch it on a bad day. We touched bottom when the depths should have been 9 feet so we had to watch out for shoaling besides the multiple crab pots sprinkled along the way. We stayed at the Pelican Marina which was within walking distance to the historic district.
Elizabeth City on the Pasquotank River is known as the Harbor of Hospitality. They welcomed us with a happy hour where the former mayor came to talk about the town and the ladies left with a rose. True Southern hospitality. We took a walking tour the next day and enjoyed the historic homes and buildings.
