August 2,
Little Current, ON
Ken went in
the dinghy to retrieve the stern line tied to a tree off the rocky shore while
our anchor was in deep water off the bow.
This is the first time we moor Mediterranean-style and he was not
comfortable with this style of anchoring.
As we traveled
15 miles to Little Current today, we listened to the morning cruiser net
broadcast on VHF channel 71. Since we
have been without TV for about a week we enjoyed listening to the weather and bits
of trivia information.
Fifteen
minutes early we arrived at the 1913 RR swing bridge, since it only opens on
the hour. The bridge clearance is 18 feet and Ken decided to go under since we
are at 17’6”. Nervously, I went downstairs
and noticed that the bridge tender came out to look as we crept under the
bridge. This century old bridge connects
Manitoulin Island to the rest of the world.
We arrived
at Little Current during the Haweater Weekend festival. The name derives from the prevalence of
haw berries, also known as hawthorn berries, among the island’s vegetation. Looks like we are going to have a weekend of
fun.
