August 7, Mackinaw City

We took a trolley ride and toured Mackinaw City. From its beginnings as a French fur-trading post in the late 1600s and a British fortress in the 1700s, Mackinaw City has grown into a summer resort town.  Today, it is the gateway to Michigan's Upper Peninsula and Mackinac Island, with fantastic shopping, fudge shops on every corner and the historical attractions including Fort Mackinac.

He is real!!!

Castle Rock near St. Ignace  was one of the stops on our trolley tour.  We climbed to the top of this 200 foot tall limestone stack  to enjoy the view.  Castle Rock was the ancient lookout of the Ojibway Indians and was often referred to as Pontiac's lookout. You can see Mackinac Island in the background.

As a point in the storm and a guiding beacon since 1889, Old Mackinac Point Light Station was in operation until 1957.
This lighthouse helped passing ships navigate through the treacherous waters of the Straits of Mackinac.

St. Ignace Mission was established in 1671 so that Christian message could be
brought to several thousand Indians living on this shore.  The founder was father Jacques Marquette, the Jesuit missionary.
