February 24 - 25
We anchored again in the Barron River and we took off for Key West the next morning. Another Gulf crossing, but this one was a milder ride. We arrived at Key West and anchored just outside Key West Bight Marina where we eventually docked. We took the dingy into town and caught the Conch Train and visited the Ernest Hemingway House which is now guarded by a colony of six-toed cats. We also toured the Little White House, built in 1890 as the Navy commandant's quarters, the house evolved into the base VIP lodge. While President Taft, Coolidge, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy all visited Key West, only Truman stayed overnight in this building. From 1946 to '48, Truman made 11 visits to the island. The house was modestly furnished and we were told many decisions were made at Truman's small desk. We also visited the southernmost point in the continental United States and had our photo taken in front of the large black, white, red and yellow concrete buoy. Our Dallas friends are coming to visit and now it is time to clean the boat!!!
