April 1, Cumberland Island, Georgia

April 1

Cumberland Island, which Ken was so looking forward to visiting, was a thrill.  We took a Ranger tour along the bumpy roads where armadillos, horses, turkey and deer roam free on this uninhabited stretch of Georgia beach.  Cumberland, the southernmost barrier island along the Georgia shore, was once a plantation area cultivated by the English colonists.  In 1881 Thomas Carnegie, brother of financier Andrew Carnegie, bought an estate on the south end of the island which we were able to tour the remains of.  No colony developed in the area, which remains virtually untouched by the hand or wallet of man.  Fifty-foot high dunes, animal life including wild horses, twisty-limbed live oaks, sparkling white sand beaches crawling with fiddler crabs and other gifts of nature abound on the island, reached only by boat.  We toured an African American church where John Kennedy Jr. was married.

Mrs. Carnegie gave one of her sons this house as a wedding gift
