March 30-31st, Fernandina Beach

March 30 - 31

Birthday delight!  The manatees were eating sea grass off the dock walls in front of our boat. There were about 6 of them and I was able to take some pics.  I finally got to see one up close!  The West Indian manatees are large gray aquatic mammals that are about 10 feet long and weigh between 800 to 1,200 pounds.  They can be found in shallow, slow-moving rivers, saltwater bays, canals and coastal areas---particularly where sea grass beds or freshwater vegetation flourish.  Manatees are a migratory species, and within the US they are concentrated in Florida during winter.  In summer months, they can be found as far west as Texas and as far north as Massachusetts, but summer sightings in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina are more common.
