April 7-8, 2012 Beufort, South Carolina

April 7 - 8

We anchored at Factory Creek and took the dingy to Beaufort which was founded in 1711 and is the second-oldest city in South Carolina.  Walking along the streets we encountered gracious antebellum homes with wide porches and tall palmetto trees, which is South Carolina's state symbol. We came across the historical Secession House.  This is where the Ordinance for Secession was drawn up and this community led Southern efforts to break away from the Union.  In 1861, a Union armada invaded the town and Beaufort remained in Northern hands throughout the war.  Union occupation spared the community from destruction, and as the war wound down Beaufort became a center of emancipation efforts.  There are 5 antebellum churches in this town as well and the historic district with the beautiful water park was a treat.
