Tonight we are staying at Joe Wheeler State Park in Alabama awaiting the boat. Because of bridge clearance it was directed South and then up North through Mississippi. This gave us the opportunity to check out where our slip will be so we will know where to dock when we pull into the Park in a few days.
On the way back to Florence, Alabama we stopped at Pope's Tavern Museum. This former stage coach / tavern greeted weary travelers or soldiers as they journeyed along Andrew Jackson's military road. The Tavern was also used as a hospital for soldiers grievously wounded in the battles of Franklin, Tenn, and Shiloh. The men from both Union and Confederate armies were housed upstairs and was treated for their wounds. It is reported that about 32 men died here of their wounds.
