Sept 1, Gwynn's Island

September 1

Took off early afternoon with Betsy and Rick to rendezvous with Cindy and John Esch from Dallas!
They met us at Gwynn's Island Museum which proved to be a glimpse into the past. Displays included many Indian & Colonial artifacts.  There were hundreds of arrowheads.  According to legend, Colonel Hugh Gwynn was exploring the Chesapeake Bay and heard cries for help near an island at the mouth of the Plankitank River.  Seeing an overturned canoe, he spotted a young girl in
the water and rescued her.  She was Pocahontas, the princess daughter of Chief Powhatan.  In gratitude for saving her life she gave the island to Col. Gwynn.  A nice story, but in actual fact,
Gywnn was given several land grants including most of the island by King James I of England.

Meeting up with Cindy and John Esch who are fellow Dallas Power Squadron members.
They are traveling the Chesapeake this year as well.
13,000 year old Clovis Point from Gwynn's Island. named after Clovis, New Mexico,
where they were first found in 1932. At that time they were the oldest human artifacts in
North America. The first Clovis point was found embedded in the skeletal remains of a
Mammoth thus dating it, and leading to the conclusion that possibly this was one of the reasons
for the extinction of the Mammoth.

Stopped at Mathews for dinner and roamed the small down town area where
most of the shops close at 4PM.  Confederate monument in the midst of the
old town.

Just off the island in Hudgins, we went to Donk's Theater, also known as
Virginia's Lil' Ole Opry, which is the local hot spot.  Something is happening
every other Saturday night and we happened to catch the talent show as well
as Donk's own Hee Haw.  It was a hoot and the talent was excellent!
