Sept 8, Poplar Forest & Natural Bridge

September 8

Poplar Forest is the home that Thomas Jefferson designed and used as his personal retreat. Overwhelmed by visitors at Monticello, Jefferson escaped several times a year to Poplar Forest to find what he called the "solitude of a hermit."  In 1806, while president, Jefferson himself directed the masons in the laying of the foundation for the dwelling here today is considered one of his most creative and original architectural designs.

one is in the background of this picture.

Walk way to Natural Bridge.

Deemed the"Bridge of God" by Monacan Indians, the Bridge has a rich spiritual history for Native Americans dating back 300 years.  Later, surveyed by young George Washington for Lord Fairfax, the Natural Bridge had caught the eye of many in colonial America.  Then, two years prior to the Revolutionary war, King George III deeded the Natural Bridge to Washington's friend Thomas Jefferson.  Always the explorer, Jefferson treasured the Natural Bridge and came here often, establishing a visitor lodge and opening he door to visitors and artists from around the world.

Twenty stories of solid rock, carved by fingers of nature.  Amazing!
Unfortunately, rain forced us to cut our tour short.
