Sept 2-3, Irvington, VA

September 2 - 3

We shared our ride with Betsy and Rick and they went to church with us.  Later we had a lazy afternoon by the marina pool in Deltaville.  Monday morning we drove to tour the steamboat museum in Irvington and it was closed.  So off we went to visit the Historic Christ Church in Weems.

Robert "King" Carter was one of colonial Virginia's most prominent citizens.  He was a member of the house of Burgess and Speaker, Treasurer and acting Governor of Virginia.  He built Christ Church for his family and his community at his own expense.  Robert Carter died in 1732, three years before his "new brick church" was completed. This 1735 church is one of the best examples of Georgian architecture in America.

Tall box seat pews

Original Three Tier pulpit.

After the revolutionary war, Americans were free to worship anywhere.  The Church of England was disestablished and the state confiscated its property.  But because Christ Church was built with personal funds on privately owned land, it was not seized.

Virginia has over 140 wineries, only California, New York, Oregon and Washington
have more wineries than Virginia.
