Sept. 8, Lynchburg

September 8

We made it to Lynchburg last evening to discover a huge street party at the historic down town.  Main Street was packed with vendors and it was fun to people watch.

Lynchburg court house built in 1855 is now a museum.

Monument Terrace, built in 1925,  is the iconic image of Lynchburg.  It is a link between Court house Hill and the central business district below that is on the banks of James River.  Through an inspired urban design, Monument Terrace evolved over many years to reach its present day appearance.  There are 132 steps, 10 landings and 11 markers and monuments along the Terrace.  Eight of the markers are devoted to military service while three commemorate civic milestones.  Monument Terrace now honors those who lost their lives in the American Civil War, The Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War, and Vietnam.

Confederate Statue, war between the states, 1861-1865 was erected in 1900.

Flanked by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east and the Allegheny Mountains to the west, the
Shenandoah Valley was breathtaking.  Blue Ridge Parkway was beautiful at every turn.
